The miraculous, life-giving grace of the New Covenant promise is that God will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. God will do in us what we cannot do on our own. God will accomplish what we can never accomplish by our own strength, will, and determination! That is the essence of grace; that is the essence of the New Covenant.
Under the Old Covenant, the promise was that if we could keep the law, we would live (Deut 5:33). If we could obey the Lord, follow His will, honor and please Him with our lives, we would be granted life. That’s an amazing, wonderful promise. However, as sinners, we would never have the capacity to achieve it. Grace works in us what the Law could never work for us.
Under the Law, salvation was a prize for which, even with all of our striving, we would always fall short. Under grace, salvation is the prize won for us and given to us in Christ. Under the Law, we would have to do, and then we would be. Under grace, God would do, and then we would be! Precious, miraculous, life-giving grace! As Paul writes in Romans 8:3 “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.
And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh…And they shall beMy people, and I will betheir God. Ez 11:19-20
Praise God for New Covenant grace
