For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.
2 Cor 8:9
The “Prosperity Gospel” is a false gospel. The grace of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ does not rescue us from financial insecurity; it rescues us from the wrath to come (1 Thess 1:10). We don’t come to Christ to be healthy, wealthy, and live out our dreams in this life. We come to Christ that we might have life abundant and eternal. Our biggest problem is not our present financial situation. Our biggest problem is that we are sinners, guilty before a holy God, with no recourse within ourselves to rectify our record of sin. The Bible is replete with verses and examples that clearly undermine belief in a prosperity gospel. Just to mention one – Jesus Himself says, “The poor you will always have with you.”
The way Jesus came to make us rich is far better than earthly, temporary financial gain!! He came to make us “rich toward God” (Luke 12:21). He came that we might be forgiven of our sin and reconciled to our heavenly Father. He came to lavish us, not with earthly treasure, but that we might have treasure in heaven (Matt 19:21). In other words, how Jesus makes us “rich” is far better than how the world defines “rich”.
He left the glories of heaven to become a servant, a suffering servant who would lay down His life to ransom us from our sin. (Phil 2:5-11) When we trust in Him, He lifts us out of our spiritual poverty and makes us sons and daughters of God! The richest people on earth are not determined by Forbes list! The richest people on earth are those who have been delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of the Beloved Son – and many of those are poor and sickly in this life but in Christ await a glorious inheritance with the saints (Col 1:12-13)!
